why 5 Shows Canceled Before Their Time ?
Why canceled AMC exciting spy plot Rubicon?
In saddening, maddening and surprising news, AMC announced yesterday that it has canceled the spy conspiracy thriller Rubicon. Though Rubicon was slow to gain traction because its story line and character focus were seeped in mystery too complicated for some viewers, Season 1 finished on an incredible note and gave us a preview of what’s to come for Will Travers (James Badge Dale) and his team of intelligence analysts. Its early demise is frustrating, but misery loves company and Rubicon is certainly not alone.
Here are a few shows whose lives were cut short. Let them remind us of what could have been, had networks not been so quick on the kill switch:
1) Arrested Development
Arrested Development is the poster child for TV shows that are canceled before getting the chance to take off. Its off-the-wall comedy, inside jokes, and show structure made it truly unique and geared toward a loyal fan base that still swears by its cult status. Though rumors of a movie still circulate today, I implore the rest of you to watch it even though it’s too late to bring it back to TV. I, myself, had an Arrested Development marathon recently because all of the episodes are available online.
2) The Riches
The Riches was an FX television show about a family of con artists who travel around the country looking for their next score. With Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver starring as mom and dad for this gang of gypsies, it came as a surprise that it was axed before we could finish Season 2, leaving the Riches family on a plot-bender. This would definitely have promise as a full-length feature film.
3) Dead Like Me
Dead Like Me is a drama and dark-comedic series from Showtime in which an 18 year-old college dropout named Georgia “George” Lass dies suddenly in a freak accident, yet remains amongst the living as a Grim Reaper. It’s amazing how a television show with such a vain and dark premise can be so funny and likable. This one did get made into a movie, albeit without all the same characters or storyline. It’s still a great watch.
4) Party Down
Party Down, starring Jane Lynch, Martin Starr, Ken Marino, Ryan Hansen, Adam Scott, and Lizzy Caplan, centers on a group of misfits working for a catering company in Los Angeles. Think of the hit HBO show Entourage, if it were funnier, more vulgar, and didn’t totally bombard you with celebrity cameos at every turn. Are we having fun yet?
5) Rubicon
Rubicon is the AMC TV thriller that brings us into the world of Will Travers (James Badge Dale), a brilliant API analyst who gets caught in the complex world of spies, terrorists, code breaking and ass kicking. Did it have the monster numbers of newly-minted AMC darling The Walking Dead? No. Was it slow to develop and totally original? Of Course. But for many great things it takes time. I really felt that the last four episodes made the entire season pay off. So it came as a complete shock to learn that AMC had canceled it. It is not too late for AMC to change their minds!
So there you have it. There are others I might have missed (King of the Hill, Deadwood, Chappelle’s Show) but that’s neither here nor there. Don’t hesitate to chime in with your favorite early losses
